B sides

Is social media a fad or the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution? Some interesting statistics in that video, and some more from Universal McCann and their “Power to the People: Social Media Tracker” study which notes that 62.5% of worldwide internet users between 16-54 have created social networking profiles. Though in an interesting departure it was found that their interactions are taking place where people desire to “focus their digital life”, around single networks, rather than with many tools that have a variety of social features. Consolidating an individuals social media in one place will see the decline of some less popular social networking sites, and the rise a dominance of its more powerful players.

Remember that Domino’s’ Pizza public relations disaster? Tim McIntyre of Domino’s, has come out with an insider perspective on how to manage crisis communications. As Domino’s tried to focus on dealing with those who were aware of the videos, while not creating more awareness, they failed to understand the viral nature of social media and the pass along value of this particular video. McIntyre noted Domino’s could have done more to act in the first 24 hours:

“If there’s a crisis happening in the social media realm, or if there’s a fire in the social media realm, there’s a segment of the population that wants you to put on a microphone and a webcam and describe what you’re doing as you’re doing it. They want you to describe how you’re putting out the fire. And that’s an interesting phenomenon. That would include responding on our Web site a little bit faster, hitting the Twitter community a little bit faster and talking to senior leadership a little bit faster.”

Tumblr, the couldn’t-be-simpler blogging site, has launched two new features: tag channels and Facebook integration. Tag channels will work much like hash tags on Twitter, where all the blog content will show as a result of real-time searches. This is a huge development because it means that now Tumblr is joining the fray for real time searching. Facebook integration will allow a quick, stylized version of blog, photo, audio and video posts directly to your page. Tumblr was quick to react to industry trends and will likely increase its exposure and audience with these service updates.

Facebook and iPhone junkies rejoice! Facebook 3.0 has been submitted for review to the iPhone app store. Updates and screen shots will be posted here, and you can be assured everyone will be counting the days until its release, as it has been called the most useful app for the iPhone to date. The new features include a news feed, ability to like items, new customizable home screens, support for video and event management. The review of Facebook 3.0 will likely not take long as Apple will not want to keep this must-have app away from the millions of Facebook users.
